Definition

It is a device in the form of a yo-yo (toy), placed in the tympanic membrane, allows to communicate (part located ear behind the eardrum) middle ear with the external ear (part of the ear with the auricle of the ear) through the tympanic (eardrum) membrane. Thus obtained is responsible for eliminating secretions of the middle ear.

Causes

IndicationsL’ use of the transtympanique aerator allows correct eardrum ventilation when the pressure prevailing within the middle ear is deficient. The yoyo is indicated when there is an embarrassing seromucous chronic otitis. Called also subacute, this inflammation of the ear is one of the most frequent causes of faulty perception of sounds by the child, and is accompanied by fluid without pus. Subacute otitis media is due to a malfunction of the duct (Eustachian tube) ranging from the middle ear (area just behind the tympanum containing the hammer, anvil and stirrup) in the pharynx. It is characterized by acute ear infections repeatedly associated with a decrease in the hearing, and can be observed also for allergic rhinitis.Another indication of the transtympanique aerator is some variety of deafness.

Medical technique

Technique of poseAprès a general anaesthetic, the specialist with a biomicroscope (magnifying device) performs a paracentesis (incision practised in the eardrum to evacuate fluid collected behind the eardrum) towards the front of the tympanum from the centre to go to the outside by avoiding the ossicles to the back. The effusion is evacuated by aspiration but without insist not to traumatize the hearing.Clinical monitoring is carried out regularly.PrécautionsL’ aerator is left in place between 8 to 12 months.Showers and baths without protection are not recommended. Swimming may however be permitted for some patients.

Complications of the disease

Sometimes, there may be a nonclosure of wound after removing the aerator.
