Systematically detect deafness at birth an ethical problem

Posted by: Sharita Holbert  |  Category: News  |  Views: 0

(Paris – Relax news)-in its final opinion, the national Advisory Committee of ethics (NEAC) considers that “the ethical conditions” of a generalization of screening for deafness at birth are not met. The early detection of hearing disorders, recommended by the high authority for health (HAS) “should not be automatic and non-accompanied by practice”, indicates the NEAC.

For the Committee, routine screening at the 2nd day of life would be “more disadvantages than benefits”. He particularly feared “an excessive medicalization of deafness”, and indicates that early tests are not sufficiently reliable. He would also like to psychological support of parents.

Each year, 800 babies are born deaf. “Next”.
