Soft drinks: Polluted sugar syrup used in production

Brussels (Reuters) – the EU Wednesday convened its Standing Committee on the food chain and animal health to an emergency meeting at the (tomorrow) because of the scandal to hormone-contaminated food. This was announced by the spokesperson of consumer protection Commissioner David Byrne in Brussels on Tuesday. The banned hormone MPA (Medroxy progesterone acetate) also in soft drinks was previously been proven in Belgian laboratory tests. The food authority of the country had taken 21 samples of two beverage producers, which had bought sugar syrup from Bioland company involved in the MPA scandal. Two of these samples showed a weak concentration of the hormone. The Commission asked the Belgian authorities for details. The company Bioland in the Belgian town of Arendonk is so far as the cause of the MPA scandal. One of the two owners – two brothers from the Netherlands – has been arrested. The company is to have gemengt hormones in sugar syrup for the pig illegally. Bioland has no connections to the the German eco-Verband. According to a report in the Sueddeutsche Zeitung, the consumer Ministry in the four States of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Brandenburg has warned against possible charges of hormone in the beverages.(pd)
