-The European Agency of the drug (EMA) has recommended Thursday, July 21, to restrict the use of the vaccine against influenza A (H1N1) Pandemrix among persons of less than 20 years. This population is asked to avoid it, except if the trivalent influenza vaccine was not available. The Committee for medicinal products for human use has been reported that vaccine risk-benefit balance remains positive.
In August, many cases of narcolepsy were observed in Finland and Sweden in children and adolescents who have been vaccinated with Pandemrix. The Swedish medical products Agency opened on August 18, an investigation on possible adverse effects caused by Pandemrix.
Preliminary study results reported from six to thirteen times more cases of narcolepsy in children and adolescents vaccinated with Pandemrix between October 2009 and December 2010. However, no increased risk has been demonstrated in adults.
