Definition

Lack of development of the odontoïde process at the level of the axis after a fracture it.

Anatomy

The odontoïde is the bone end (offset) of the axis of the second cervical vertebra articulates with the first cervical vertebrae also called atlas.

Evolution of the disease

This condition is evolving piece of a few years to the dislocation atloido-axoïdienne i.e. dysfunction (malfunction) the articulation between the atlas and the axis. In some patients the odontaplasie causes disruptions in the functioning of the spinal cord because of the occurrence of compression.Sometimes evolution leads to paraplegia and then to a spastic quadriplegia.
