Happiness: Mood brightens fast thinking

Posted by: Lue Nylen  |  Category: News  |  Views: 2

Ithaca (ddp). Fast thinking makes happy: who feels his thoughts hunted only through his head, is energetic, creative, cheerful and self-confident as someone whose thinking only slow float. Two American psychologists from the results of a test series, in which they artificially accelerated the speed of thought by volunteers and slow down draw this conclusion. While the mood of the subjects of the speed of her thoughts was influenced as well as, if these thoughts had a positive or negative content. The results could help to find new approaches for the treatment of depression, tell of Princeton University and Daniel Wegner from Harvard University in the journal «Psychological science» Emily Pronin (vol. 17, p. 807). For their study, scientists shared a 144 volunteers into four groups and had read short statements from a screen. The texts published very quickly at a time by two groups, so that the subjects had to read twice as fast as they normally would have done. At the other two groups, the statements were displayed slowly so that the participants had to curtail their normal reading speed in half. Statements with positive content got this one fast and one of the slow groups as «I feel Wow, great today!» purposed while the other two groups read negative statements like “I would like to sleep and never wake up”. When psychologists then interviewed the subjects according to their current mood, a clear trend was emerging: in two groups, which had quickly read their statements, enthusiastic, happy, attentive participants felt creative and active as the participants in the respective peer group. Also, they rated themselves as influential and attractive. The effect of the speed was just as big as the already known influence of the contents of thoughts on the mood. The fact that the speed of thought have an impact on the mood of a person, would have given previously, the researchers write. So are about «raging thoughts» bipolar person a typical flag for a manic phase with euphoria, activity and high creativity. Conversely, depression are often characterized by slower thinking. The psychologists therefore consider it likely that the mood could be brightened by an artificial acceleration of the thought processes in a depressive people. The same strategy could be their opinion in everyday situations as pay about at work, where a better mood improved motivation and hence productivity.
