Farmers President Sonnleitner criticised eco-label as misleading

Posted by: Olivia Giller  |  Category: News  |  Views: 0

Munich (Reuters) – Gerd Sonnleitner, President of the farmers has criticized the approved eco-label for organic products as “Misleading”. The seal may fill only the lower EU standard and remain far behind the quality requirements back, that apply to products produced in Germany, Sonnleitner said the news magazine “Focus”. In contrast to the national legislation not farming operation must be managed at the eco-label ecologically, but only a part of: “Even the use of feedingstuffs not organic is allowed.” Renate Kuenast have succumbed to the pressure of trade, Sonnleitner of the green Federal Economic Minister accused. The new eco-label is a “misleading”. As the “Berliner Zeitung” reported, a formulation was based on the eco-label but which requires a feeding with ecological produced feed without the addition of antibiotics or productivity promoters. With his criticism, Sonnleitner is in rare agreement with the Association of organic farming (Agöl), which however no longer belonged to the great organic agriculture associations Bioland and Demeter. While it is Agöl matter to impose higher standards for the eco-label, the farmers Union fear to lose market shares for conventionally produced food. (ths)
