Embryo research: Commission for promotion

Posted by: Hildegard Brouillet  |  Category: News  |  Views: 0

Brussels/Berlin (Reuters) – the EU Commission wants to basically promote research in which embryos are destroyed for the production of stem cells. This proposal presented in Brussels on Wednesday met with heavy criticism by euro members of Parliament and German medical profession, which keep objectionable for ethical this so-called consumptive embryo research. Such works are banned in Germany. There are embryos considered protect value life. The German Research Ministry would continue to advocate for a stronger embryo. According to the proposed deadline only embryos should be used in the funded work, derived before 27 June 2002. Also, may they be not specially manufactured, but must be left in an artificial insemination, said science Commissioner Philippe Busquin. Prerequisite for a promotion to be also that parents who make an artificial insemination had released supernumerary embryos for research. You shall have no financial benefits. From supernumerary embryos, researchers want to obtaining stem cells to produce new tissue around for heart or Parkinson’s sufferers. The embryos are destroyed in this. Now, the countries on the Commission proposal must consult and vote. It is expected that the members of the competent Council require changes. A decision must be by the end of the year. Until the autumn, States may be promoted after decision of the EU no such projects. The Commission’s proposal respects national legislation explicitly. However, should also States with bans co-finance indirectly consumptive embryo research via the EU budgets. In Germany, it is only allowed to experiment, produced from embryos before 1 January 2002 with imported stem cells. The killing of embryos is punishable by law. Busquin said however: “by encouraging the research and establishment of this necessary strict ethical rules the EU in a responsible way is helping, that for the benefit of patients worldwide science advanced.” The research is to are supported only with EU funds, if there is no alternative to the project, for example, by using so-called adult stem cells from adults. The money will come from the funding pot filled with EUR 2.5 billion for biotechnology. The Federal Government makes further front against the development plans of the Commission. It’ll still sought a solution based on the German legal position, declared the State Secretary in the Ministry of research, Wolf Michael Catenhusen. The German Medical Association, sharply criticized the Commission’s plans. The intention to fund the production of stem cells from embryos, was scandalous, said the Chamber in Berlin. The CDU MEPs Peter Liese, even health professionals and expert of his group for bioethics, said: “This proposal of the Commission must be accepted so.” According to his, there was heated argument among the Commissioners who had moved the decision about a week. Germany must implement improvements together with Italy, Austria, Spain, Portugal and Ireland. The Green MEP Hiltrud Breyer called the proposal from the Commission “illegal and criminal”. “With its proposal the Commission demoted each human embryo fathered once for the purpose of artificial insemination, to the biological recovery material”, she said in Brussels. The Deputy Chairman of the CDU/CSU Bundestag group, Prof. Maria Böhmer, called the proposal “not acceptable”. A deadline is contrary to the key demand of Germany, to promote any consumptive embryo research. In France alone, 70,000 to 80,000 frozen embryos stored according to Böhmer. Far more likely to be in Belgium and the UK.
