EHEC: ban on the import of poppy clover seeds from Egypt

Brussels (dapd). The European Union has imposed a ban on the import of poppy clover seeds from Egypt. In addition all deliveries are to be destroyed by poppy clover seeds from the period between 2009 and 2011, as the Commission announced in Brussels on Tuesday. According to health Commissioner John Dalli of the report of the European food safety authority has led to the decision.

EFSA had confirmed suspicions that contaminated poppy clover seeds from Egypt were responsible for the outbreak of dangerous bowel disease in France and Germany. As sprouts and seeds would often mixed, could not be excluded, that other bars had been contaminated, said a spokeswoman of the EU authority of news agency dapd.

The Authority further discourages the consumption of uncooked sprouts. On the cultivation for personal use, consumers should refrain from further.
