An average 162 people die Jena (CNN) – in Germany every day of blood poisoning, significantly more than so far assumed. The investigation of the competence network sepsis (SepNet) according to the blood poisoning (sepsis) is the third most common cause of death in Germany. According to the new data, almost as many people die because such as heart on an acute attack, the sudden closure of the coronary vessels. Said Frank Martin Brunkhorst, study coordinator of SepNet funded by the Federal Research Ministry on Monday in Jena. Other consequences of a narrowing of the coronary vessels are leading cause of death in Germany. So far had been assumed every year 39 000 cases of sepsis in Germany, of which 6000 fatally ended. According to the study of SepNet people fall ill per year 154 000 on a runaway infection by bacteria or other microorganisms such as fungi. Of which some 60 000 at the sepsis would die, said the intensive medicine. The sepsis call therefore significantly more deaths than breast or colorectal cancer. Specialists of SepNet visited 454 intensive care units in German clinics between January 2003 and January 2004 to randomly set deadlines. Eleven percent of there treated 3800 patients suffering from a blood poisoning. More than half of the reported patients died of the disease. Sepsis caused huge costs. Alone for the treatment of patients on the intensive care unit, an estimated 1.7 billion euros be spent according to the per year. This corresponds to about 32 percent of the total cost for German intensive care units. A blood poisoning results from an infectious disease. Most common carriers were followed the lung infections in the abdomen, Brunkhorst said. Often there would be a sepsis, which have developed from the pneumonia out as cause of death then pneumonia were specified, actually but. The sepsis is difficult foreseeable. Often, the diagnosis will recognized too late. Early signs were, when speaking of the patient not to antibiotics, he next fever and is confused.
