Alcohol: Moderate drinking holds slim

Munich (netdoktor.de) – A glass of wine a day protects against overweight women. A study of Brigham and women’s Hospital in Boston, United States comes to this surprising conclusion. Women who regularly drank less than women who took no or few alcoholic drinks which took over the study period of 13 years. This was whether the comparatively high Kaloriengehalts of alcohol surprising, writes the team of doctors in the trade magazine “Archives of Internal Medicine” (2010; 170: 453-461).

Lu Wang and colleagues had compared data from more than 19,000-normal weight women, who were more than 39 years old. A good third of the participants had indicated to drink any alcohol at all, another third drank the equivalent of less than two glasses of wine per week. The remaining women took 14 glasses per week to between two and a maximum.

Regardless of the preferred alcoholic beverages – beer, liqueur, white or red wine – decreased the risk of being overweight in the next few years with rising consumption. Women who took about a glass of wine or a pint beer which, pointed up the slightest risk for overweight or obesity – this corresponds to 15 to 30 grams of alcohol per day. Most clearly the relationship with red wine turned out least in white wine.

Doctors warn to drink more alcohol on the basis of the outcome of the study. On the one hand, it is not yet known how the drinks repelled the excess pounds. On the other hand, the well-known medical and psychosocial problems of regular alcohol consumption would be with the. (fs)
